Social psychology examines how individuals' thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. This is a high-yield topic on the MCAT's Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations section, with questions appearing as both standalone items and passage-based sets. The MCAT tests your understanding of social influence, group dynamics, attitudes, attribution, prejudice, and aggression.

Attribution is the process of explaining the causes of behavior. The fundamental attribution error (also called correspondence bias) is the tendency to overattribute others' behavior to dispositional (internal, personality-based) factors and underattribute to situational (external, environmental) factors. For example, if someone cuts you off in traffic, you might think 'they are a terrible driver' (dispositional) rather than 'they might be rushing to the hospital' (situational).
The actor-observer bias is the tendency to attribute our own behavior to situational factors but others' behavior to dispositional factors. Self-serving bias is attributing our successes to internal factors ('I'm smart') and failures to external factors ('the test was unfair'). These biases have cultural variations: collectivist cultures show a weaker fundamental attribution error and are more likely to consider situational factors.
Conformity is adjusting behavior or thinking to align with a group standard. Solomon Asch's line experiment demonstrated that approximately 75% of participants conformed to an obviously incorrect group judgment at least once. Conformity increases with group size (up to about 5 members), unanimity (a single dissenter dramatically reduces conformity), group cohesiveness, and public (vs. private) responses.
Informational influence occurs when we conform because we believe others have more accurate information (common in ambiguous situations). Normative influence occurs when we conform to gain social approval or avoid rejection. Identification is conforming to be like someone we admire. Internalization is the deepest form of conformity, where we genuinely adopt the group's beliefs.
Stanley Milgram's obedience experiments showed that approximately 65% of participants administered what they believed were lethal electric shocks to another person when instructed by an authority figure. Obedience increases with: proximity of the authority figure, remoteness of the victim, institutional prestige, and lack of dissenting models. Obedience decreases when participants can see the victim, when the authority figure is absent, or when other participants refuse to obey.
Milgram's findings demonstrate the power of situational factors over dispositional ones — ordinary people can commit harmful acts under social pressure. This connects to the fundamental attribution error: we tend to think 'I would never do that' (dispositional attribution) while underestimating the power of the situation.
Social facilitation is the tendency for the presence of others to improve performance on simple or well-rehearsed tasks but impair performance on complex or novel tasks. The Yerkes-Dodson law relates: moderate arousal optimizes performance, and the presence of others increases arousal. Social loafing is the tendency to exert less effort when working in a group than when working alone, particularly when individual contributions are not identifiable.
Group polarization is the tendency for group discussion to strengthen the group's dominant viewpoint, making the group's position more extreme than the average individual position. Groupthink occurs when the desire for group cohesion overrides realistic appraisal of alternatives, leading to poor decision-making. Symptoms include illusion of invulnerability, self-censorship, and pressure on dissenters. Deindividuation is the loss of self-awareness and self-restraint in group situations, often facilitated by anonymity (e.g., online behavior, mob violence).
Attitudes have three components: affective (feelings), behavioral (actions), and cognitive (beliefs) — the ABC model. Cognitive dissonance (Festinger) occurs when attitudes and behavior conflict, creating discomfort that motivates attitude change to restore consistency. In the classic experiment, participants paid $1 to describe a boring task as enjoyable experienced more dissonance and changed their attitudes more than those paid $20 (insufficient justification effect).
The elaboration likelihood model describes two routes to persuasion. The central route involves careful evaluation of arguments and produces lasting attitude change (requires motivation and ability). The peripheral route relies on superficial cues like source attractiveness, number of arguments, or emotional appeal and produces less durable change. Foot-in-the-door technique (small request followed by large request) and door-in-the-face technique (large request followed by small request) are common compliance strategies.
Stereotypes are cognitive schemas — generalized beliefs about a group that are applied to individual members. They can be positive or negative and operate automatically (implicit stereotypes). Prejudice is an affective component — a preconceived negative attitude toward a group. Discrimination is the behavioral component — unjustified negative actions toward a group. These three components (cognitive, affective, behavioral) often operate together but can exist independently.
In-group bias (favoring members of your own group) and out-group homogeneity (perceiving members of other groups as more similar to each other than they actually are) contribute to prejudice. The contact hypothesis states that prejudice can be reduced through intergroup contact under specific conditions: equal status, common goals, cooperation, and institutional support. Stereotype threat occurs when awareness of a negative stereotype about one's group impairs performance on stereotype-relevant tasks.
Biological factors in aggression include testosterone (correlates with aggression), serotonin (low levels associated with impulsive aggression), and amygdala activation. The frustration-aggression hypothesis proposes that frustration (being blocked from a goal) triggers aggression. Social learning theory (Bandura) emphasizes that aggression is learned through observation and reinforcement. Deindividuation and dehumanization increase aggressive behavior by reducing personal responsibility and empathy.
The bystander effect (Darley and Latane) is the finding that the more bystanders present during an emergency, the less likely any individual is to help. This occurs through diffusion of responsibility (someone else will help) and pluralistic ignorance (looking to others who are not reacting, concluding the situation is not an emergency). Factors that increase helping include: being in a good mood, feeling guilty, seeing others help (modeling), having a personal connection to the victim, and having fewer bystanders present.
Altruism is helping others with no expectation of personal benefit. Theories explaining prosocial behavior include: kin selection (helping genetic relatives increases inclusive fitness), reciprocal altruism (helping others who may help you later), and the empathy-altruism hypothesis (empathetic concern produces genuinely altruistic motivation). The social exchange theory suggests that helping is motivated by cost-benefit analysis, even if the 'benefit' is feeling good about yourself.
Social identity theory (Tajfel) proposes that we derive part of our identity from group memberships and are motivated to maintain a positive social identity. This drives in-group favoritism and out-group derogation. Self-concept includes self-esteem (evaluation of self-worth), self-efficacy (belief in ability to accomplish tasks, from Bandura), and locus of control (internal = I control outcomes, external = outside forces control outcomes, from Rotter).

For passage-based questions, focus on identifying the independent and dependent variables in described studies and connecting findings to established theories. The MCAT may describe a classic experiment with modifications and ask you to predict results.
