Overview

Analyzing arguments is a critical skill for the CARS section and, to a lesser extent, the Psych/Soc section of the MCAT. The ability to deconstruct an author's reasoning, identify assumptions, evaluate evidence, and recognize rhetorical strategies separates high CARS scorers from average ones. Approximately 30% of CARS questions fall under 'Reasoning Within the Text,' which directly tests argument analysis, and many 'Reasoning Beyond' questions also require this skill.

This guide covers the structure of arguments, types of reasoning, logical fallacies, rhetorical devices, and strategies for evaluating the strength of arguments. These skills also transfer to the experimental reasoning required in science passages, where you must evaluate whether data supports a hypothesis.

1. The Structure of an Argument

Every argument consists of premises (evidence or reasons) and a conclusion (the claim being supported). Premises answer the question 'Why should I believe this?' while the conclusion answers 'What is the author trying to prove?' Strong arguments have clear, relevant premises that logically support the conclusion. Weak arguments have irrelevant premises, insufficient evidence, or logical gaps between premises and conclusion.

On the MCAT, arguments can be explicit (the author states both premises and conclusion directly) or implicit (you must infer the conclusion or identify unstated assumptions). Unstated assumptions are premises the author takes for granted. Questions that ask 'Which of the following is assumed by the author?' are testing your ability to identify these hidden premises.

2. Deductive vs. Inductive Reasoning

Deductive reasoning moves from general principles to specific conclusions. If the premises are true and the logic is valid, the conclusion is necessarily true. Example: All mammals are warm-blooded. Dogs are mammals. Therefore, dogs are warm-blooded. Deductive arguments are either valid (the logic works) or invalid (the logic fails), regardless of whether the premises are actually true.

Inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to general conclusions. Inductive arguments can be strong or weak but never achieve certainty. Example: Every swan I have observed is white. Therefore, all swans are white. (This was believed until black swans were discovered in Australia.) The MCAT uses inductive reasoning in experimental passages — researchers observe data and draw broader conclusions, and you must evaluate whether those conclusions are justified.

3. Common Logical Fallacies

Recognizing logical fallacies helps you evaluate arguments on the MCAT and eliminate flawed answer choices. The most commonly tested fallacies include:

  • Ad hominem: attacking the person making the argument rather than the argument itself

  • Straw man: misrepresenting an opponent's argument to make it easier to refute

  • False dichotomy: presenting only two options when more exist

  • Slippery slope: claiming one event will inevitably lead to a chain of negative consequences without justification

  • Appeal to authority: claiming something is true because an authority figure says so, without evidence

  • Circular reasoning (begging the question): using the conclusion as a premise

  • Hasty generalization: drawing a broad conclusion from insufficient evidence

  • Post hoc ergo propter hoc: assuming that because B followed A, A caused B

  • Red herring: introducing irrelevant information to distract from the main argument

  • Equivocation: using a word with multiple meanings in different parts of the argument

4. Evaluating Evidence

When the MCAT asks you to evaluate the strength of an argument, consider: Is the evidence relevant to the conclusion? Is the evidence sufficient (one anecdote vs. a large study)? Is the evidence from a credible source? Are there alternative explanations for the evidence? Could the evidence support a different conclusion? These questions apply to both CARS passages and science passages.

Pay attention to qualifiers and hedging language. An author who says 'this evidence suggests' is making a weaker claim than one who says 'this evidence proves.' Questions may ask you to identify the difference between correlation and causation, or to determine what additional evidence would strengthen or weaken the argument.

5. Strengthening and Weakening Arguments

These are common CARS question types. To strengthen an argument, look for answer choices that provide additional evidence for the conclusion, eliminate alternative explanations, or support an unstated assumption. To weaken an argument, look for answer choices that provide counterevidence, offer alternative explanations for the data, or undermine a key assumption.

A common mistake is choosing an answer that simply contradicts the conclusion. Effective weakening attacks the logical connection between the premises and the conclusion, not the conclusion itself. Similarly, effective strengthening reinforces the reasoning, not just restates the conclusion.

6. Rhetorical Devices

Rhetorical devices are techniques authors use to persuade. The MCAT may ask about the function or effect of these devices within a passage.

  • Analogy/metaphor: comparing two things to make an abstract concept concrete or to strengthen an argument by association

  • Juxtaposition: placing two contrasting ideas side by side to highlight differences

  • Rhetorical questions: questions asked for effect, not to elicit answers; they guide the reader toward the author's conclusion

  • Anecdote: a brief personal story used to illustrate a point or engage the reader emotionally

  • Irony/sarcasm: saying the opposite of what is meant to critique or mock a position

  • Appeal to emotion (pathos): using emotional language to persuade rather than relying on logic

  • Appeal to logic (logos): using data, statistics, and logical reasoning to support claims

  • Appeal to credibility (ethos): establishing the author's expertise or moral character to build trust

  • Concession: acknowledging the validity of an opposing viewpoint before countering it, which strengthens the author's credibility

  • Repetition/emphasis: restating key ideas to reinforce their importance

7. Identifying Author's Purpose

Beyond the main idea (what the author argues), you need to understand the author's purpose (why they are writing). Common purposes include: to inform (present facts objectively), to persuade (convince the reader of a position), to critique (evaluate and find fault with an idea or work), to reconcile (bridge two opposing views), and to explore (examine multiple perspectives without committing to one). The author's purpose shapes the tone, evidence selection, and structure of the passage.

8. Implicit Arguments and Inference

Many CARS questions ask what can be inferred from the passage. Valid inferences follow logically from what the passage states — they go slightly beyond the text but must be supported by it. An inference is NOT a guess, speculation, or opinion. When evaluating inference answer choices, ask: 'Does the passage provide enough information to conclude this?' If the answer requires assumptions the passage does not support, it is wrong.

  • Choosing answers that go too far beyond the text (speculation vs. inference)

  • Missing concession/counterargument structure and attributing the opposing view to the author

  • Failing to identify unstated assumptions when asked what the argument depends upon

  • Focusing on whether you agree with the argument rather than evaluating its logical structure

  • Ignoring qualifiers ('most,' 'some,' 'often') that limit the scope of claims

  • Not recognizing when an author uses rhetorical questions to imply a position without stating it directly

Practice Strategy

To improve argument analysis, practice breaking every CARS passage into its logical components: What is the thesis? What premises support it? What assumptions does it rest on? What would weaken it? Do this for every passage during practice, even when the questions do not explicitly ask about argument structure. This habit makes you a more efficient and accurate reader.

For rhetorical device questions, build a mental checklist of devices and practice identifying them in everything you read — newspaper editorials, academic articles, even advertisements. The more familiar you are with these techniques, the faster you can identify them under timed conditions. Keep a log of questions you miss and note which argument analysis skills they tested. Most students have blind spots in specific areas (often assumptions or inference) that targeted practice can address.
